Tanchoi has an interesting history to its name made up of tan (tran in gujarati, meaning three) and chhoi (the weaver from china who taught this weaving technique), together making tanchoi.

Later, Benarasi weavers learnt the art of weaving the brocades and Benaras became home to Tanchoi sarees.
